Austin pharmacy struggles to stay afloat with drug shortages

Naus Enfield Drug Manager told KVUE prior to the pandemic that they would fill out about 100 prescriptions every day. Today it’s between 20 and 30.
AUSTIN, Texas – Pharmacies in Austin and across the country are experiencing delivery bottlenecks. Key drugs are out there and many are struggling to get their hands on the resources available.
One pharmacy in Austin has been hit particularly hard. Nau’s Enfield Drug is a local staple – a business that has been around for decades but may have to close its doors.
“We’ve probably been giving out an average of about 100 prescriptions a day,” said manager Laura Labay. “I noticed that my fill went down to 20-30 a day and that is going down.
It’s a significant drop. If the prescriptions don’t come in, money is lost. According to Labay, a pharmacy is expensive to run and they are trying to keep up.
“We had prescriptions that we couldn’t get the medication,” added Labay. “We’ll try to go to second and third parties, but sometimes you can’t get the drugs.”
And if customers there cannot get the drug, they ask at other pharmacies.
“There are times when we can’t get the drugs so we have to relocate these patients,” she added.
Labay said the bad thing is that many of these customers are older so they don’t go to two different pharmacies for different prescriptions. You will stay with one.
That said, Labay is losing loyal customers. She’s afraid she’ll never get it back.
Nau’s isn’t the only pharmacy having problems, however.
Dr. Ashley Darling told KVUE pharmacies across Austin that these supply bottlenecks have been affected.
“I believe there were nearly 200 drugs the last time I worked on the FDA website that were backordered or currently had low inventory,” Darling said.

Naus pharmacist Michael Herrera said if people don’t get the prescriptions on time, they could end up in the hospital. Many rely on their medication to treat urgent medical conditions.
“I needed migraine medication and it took me three days, you know, and I’m a pharmacist myself and actually work in one, and it was still several days,” Darling said.
With pharmacies continuing to struggle, Labay hopes this shortage of supply doesn’t cost them the family business.
“It was very, very difficult to stay afloat,” added Labay.
