WASHINGTON, July 13, 2021 / PRNewswire / – US News & World Report, the global authority on rankings and consumer advice, today unveiled the best places to live for 2021-2022 The United States. As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic cause many Americans to reassess where to settle, the new list ranks the 150 most populous metropolitan areas in the country based on affordability, job prospects, and attractiveness.

For the second year in a row, Boulder, CO 1st place due to high quality of life, job market and attractiveness. Raleigh & Durham, NC jumped nine places to place 2 and Huntsville, AL catapulted 12 places to 3rd place. Fayetteville, AR rose four places to fourth, and Austin, TX fell two places to 5th place.

“This year we’re looking at how the most populous metro areas in the US fared for much of the coronavirus pandemic and how far they need to come to recover,” said Devon Thorsby, Real estate editor at US News. “It should come as no surprise that many metropolitan areas where unemployment skyrocketed in 2020 fell in the rankings, but those with higher employment stability tended to do well.”

With an unemployment rate that reached almost 9% on a monthly average last year, Boston, MA fell 13 places to 31st place while Las Vegas, Nevada – which had an average unemployment rate of around 15% – fell by 50 places to 137th place. Also because of the decline in labor market values, San Diego, California fell by 52 places to 97th and Honolulu, HI 42 places fell to 113th place. Meanwhile, metropolitan regions that have significant employment in research, universities or aerospace technology – such as the three largest metropolitan regions Raleigh & Durham, NC and Huntsville, AL – Tend to experience more economic stability and do better overall.

In addition, rising cost of living – which is included in the value factor – contributed to areas like Austin, TX (No. 5), Colorado Springs, Colorado (No. 6) and Denver, CO (14th place) slightly back in the ranking. “Housing affordability is always of great concern, but as people solidify their plans to work remotely, struggle to find a house in a hot housing market, or consider moving abroad, the low cost of living is even more important” said Thorsby.

The best places to live in 2021-2022 were determined based on a methodology that took into account the assessments of labor market, value, quality of life, attractiveness and net migration. They were determined, in part, from a public survey of thousands of people in the United States to find out which qualities they consider important in a place to live. The methodology also takes into account data from the US Census Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Sharecare, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as the US news rankings of the best high schools and best hospitals.
