SAN ANTONIO – Editor’s Note: This story was published through a partnership between the San Antonio Business Journal and KSAT.
Several news reports suggest Elon Musk’s The Boring Company is interested in digging huge tunnels across central Texas for transportation.
KXAN News reports that Austin’s development division said the company had provided them with a high-level introduction of a tunnel that would lead from the new Tesla factory in East Austin to the airport and then downtown.

The San Antonio Express-News reports that Tesla is proposing a tunnel from downtown San Antonio to the airport. The New York Post published an article on the subject based on reporting from Express News, which fueled further speculation.

The reports are sparse in terms of additional details and sources. The Boring Company has not confirmed such discussions and, like all Musk-run companies, does not do much in public relations. Aside from job postings and the occasional tweets – like the one below from November – very little is known about the California company’s local activities and intentions.
Boring Co. currently has 19 open positions in Austin, including nine in engineering.
ABJ has reported for months that The Boring Company is optimistic about Austin. In July, ABJ confirmed that a company affiliated with The Boring Company had amassed massive amounts of land in Northwest Bastrop, an eastern suburb of Austin, not far from the Musk-controlled company. This article also brought to light job postings highlighting plans to develop an autonomous tunnel boring machine.
