Some northwest Austin residents and business owners are protesting the purchase, saying they have safety concerns.
AUSTIN, Texas – People opposed to the city of Austin buying a hotel for the homeless plan to share their opposition on Saturday morning.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. near the Candlewood Suites Hotel. Stop Candlewood supporters will give members of the community an open microphone at the town hall event.
Austin City Council first voted to buy the hotel in northwest Austin in February.
Some local residents and business owners in the area are protesting the purchase, saying they have safety concerns.
Some Williamson County executives are also unhappy with the purchase because they were not involved in the discussions. The Candlewood Suites hotel is within the Austin city limits but is also located in Williamson County.
Last month, Austin City Council discussed advancing the purchase of Candlewood Suites for $ 9.5 million, a $ 50,000 increase from the last discussion in the city council. Read this resolution.
Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell has threatened the city with legal action if the purchase continues.
Gravell expressed concern about a letter he had received from Austin’s Mayor Steve Adler and four other council members in which he pledged “to work together in the hope that we can work closely together to share a common approach to the challenges of homelessness that are ours Affect the region ”.
“You have again chosen not to communicate with Williamson County. I want to make it very clear, Mr Mayor. If you choose to go further down this path, you are forcing Williamson County to do something and hold you accountable, ”Gravell said during the court session of the commissioners before asking the county legal team to prepare the work required.
