Musk responded earlier Sunday to a Fox News report on Austin’s proposal to increase the city’s police force and to a series of reports of the record number of murders in the city in 2021.
Proposal A, a vote supported by the Save Austin Now group for the November 2nd election, would require a minimum of two Austin police officers per 1,000 residents, and police officers an additional 40 hours of police training each year on topics such as gun skills and active shooter scenarios.
It comes after Austin City Council voted following George Floyd’s protests last year to cut up to $ 150 million from the police department’s budget – just over a third of the total – and put that money into other public funds Reinvest services. Since then, the city has seen homicides increase by nearly 71%.

Musk made headlines earlier this month after announcing that Tesla’s headquarters will be moving from Fremont, California to Austin in part because of the cost of living.
“I’m excited to announce that we are moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas,” said Musk during Tesla’s annual shareholders’ meeting on October 7th.
He said the electric car maker will “continue to expand significantly in California – but even more here in Texas.”

“It’s hard for people to buy houses and a lot of people have to come from far away,” he said. “We’ve made it as far as we can, but … there’s a limit to how big you can scale it in the Bay Area.”
“Here in Austin, our factory is about five minutes from the airport, 15 minutes from downtown, and we’re going to create an ecological paradise here because we’re right on the Colorado River,” he added. “It is going to be great.”
