Governor Hochul Announces 43North 2021 Startup Competition Finalists

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the 19 finalists for the seventh annual 43North startup competition. Finalists will head to Buffalo later this month to apply for one of eight investments totaling $ 5 million, including a grand prize of $ 1 million. Hailing from the US, Canada and the UK, these startups cover a wide range of industries from clinical trials to fintech services, sustainable agriculture, artificial intelligence and consumer tools.
“Buffalo has a rich history of innovation, and 43North continues that tradition by attracting some of the world’s most exciting startups to the region.” said Governor Hochul. “The clash of technology and talent is fueling remarkable economic growth, and we look forward to seeing this year’s finalists compete to be part of that transformation.”
The finalists were announced live by Kevin Siskar, VP of Portfolio and Selection at 43North, who led the diligence process along with over 60 jurors who reviewed applications, met with founders and made recommendations for selection.

Participants in this year’s 43North Finals will cheer on a new group of participants who will vie for a spot in the 43North portfolio and meet new judges. In addition to a top investment of $ 1 million and seven prizes of $ 500,000, the winners will receive free space in 43North’s new incubator in Seneca One Tower, advice from experienced mentors in their field, and access to other businesses -Incentive programs.
Over the past seven years, 43North has invested in a diverse portfolio of 51 companies, of which 31% are color pens and 23% are female founders. Almost half of these companies have maintained a physical presence in Queen City and created over 800 local jobs. One of the ranks is tech unicorn ACV Auctions, which took 43North to new heights after going public on March 24, 2021 as the first listed portfolio company.
