The Palo Alto, California-based electric vehicle maker is expected to begin production by the end of the year, and local economists said the recent surge in Tesla’s talent search was expected. An even bigger wave of job creation is likely to hit the subway in a few months around production start, said Ed Latson, executive director of the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association.
The automaker selected the Austin area to be the location of its next gigafactory in the summer of 2020, which is expected to employ at least 5,000 workers. The new factory will build Tesla’s model cybertruck, and it will also be the second U.S. factory for the Model Y small SUV.
