Virden confirmed her candidacy for mayor on November 8th. In 2020, she ran for District 10 on Austin City Council.
AUSTIN, Texas – Jennifer Virden, a native of Australia and a small business owner, announced on Nov. 8 that she was running for mayor’s office in 2022. If she were elected, she would be the first woman to hold office in 40 years, according to her campaign Announcement press release.
“We all love Austin, and it is time to seriously undo the damage that is being done to our city,” Virden said in the press release. “Together, we can bring the competent, sensible, and compassionate leadership Austin needs now more than ever.”
Virden said she was determined to “restore police staff to pre-2020 levels, honestly address the still unresolved camping crisis for the homeless, streamline permitting for housing and other developments, make sensible changes to land development law, and properly maintain our parks and world-class green spaces. “
In November 2020, Virden ran against incumbent Alison Alter for District 10 of Austin City Council, which includes parts of the Northwest and West Austin. In this election, Alter led a field of seven candidates with 34.76% of the vote, while Virden took second place with 25.35% of the vote.
The two then faced each other in a runoff election in December 2020, in which Alter was ultimately victorious. According to Monday’s press release, Virden said she was only 588 votes away from deprecating old age.
“We ‘looked’ at them then and we can do it again – not just in District 10, but this time all over Austin,” Virden said in the press release. “I’m not a lifelong politician or lawyer with a lot of money: I’m a small business owner who uses my decades of building and restoring houses to build and restore a city that our mayor and council have severely damaged in recent years . ” . I firmly believe that our best years are ahead and it will take a fresh voice with the right skills and experience to bring us back to where we know Austin. “
Virden is the first officially declared candidate for the mayoral campaign in 2022.
Born in Austria, she is an independent real estate agent and general contractor for renovations. She and her husband have two grown children, both graduates from Doss Elementary School, Murchison Middle School, Anderson High School, and the University of Texas at McCombs School of Business in Austin.
