Jim Wesley Kersey

Jim Wesley Kersey passed away on Tuesday June 29, 2021 at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 76 after a brief illness.

He was born on October 18, 1944 in Decatur to Eulalah and Clinton Kersey. Jim graduated from McCallum High School in Austin in 1963. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters of Arts in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. In 1967 he married Sally Spencer Kersey.

His professional career has included: probation officer for the Illinois Department of Correction, Rockford, Illinois; and Director, Reception and Classification Center, Texas Youth Commission, Gatesville. He retired as a supervisor for the US Parole Office, Administrative Office of US Courts, Dallas.

Jim’s nature was that of serving and helping others. In retirement, he spent his time showing love, kindness, and compassion to everyone he dealt with. He never knew a stranger. His days were mainly organized around caring for his wife Sally, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1989.

Jim’s love of history led him to volunteer as a lecturer for Haven for Hope and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. He served as Treasurer of the Professional Tour Guide Association of San Antonio and directed tours for the Road Scholars.

He was a seasoned traveler himself, visiting many countries and taking a variety of photos of trains and stations. He loved trains and had many stories to tell about them, their brand, history, his own family’s connection with trains and even at the age of 76 he would stop in mid-sentence when a train passed by and say, “Look, a train ! ”With shining eyes. He also loved recumbent biking on the San Antonio Greenway Trails, stopping frequently to photograph wildlife and flowers.

He is survived by his wife Sally; Daughters Carolyn Kersey and Diana Kersey and wife Christina Palafox of San Antonio; Brother Bill Kersey and wife Shirley; Sister Janis Kaker of Bridgeport; Brother-in-law Charlie Spencer and Mrs. Rose; and sister-in-law Patty Frisbee and husband Gene. He left behind many nieces and nephews as well as the “adapted” grandson Benji Boyd.

The family is grateful for the travel adventures and affection Jim has shared with Susan Torrance over the last few years of his life. His entire family and multitude of friends will miss his historical anecdotes, humor, and unconditional love.

On August 3, at Trinity Baptist Church, 319 E. Mulberry Ave. held in San Antonio, a celebration of life. Dr. D. Leslie Hollon officiated.
