2 California boroughs among the cities with the highest education
According to WalletHub, cities want to attract a highly skilled workforce in order to increase their economic growth and tax revenues. A higher level of education usually leads to higher salaries. The more graduates earn, the more taxes they pay over time, according to the Economic Policy Institute.
In return, educated people want to live in a place where they can get a good return on their educational investment. People also tend to marry other people with the same level of education, which means that cities that already have large educated populations can be more attractive to those with college degrees.
However, not all highly educated people will flock to the same areas. Some may prefer to have many people with a similar level of education around them to socialize and develop a career. Others may want to be a big fish in a small pond. Not every city will offer university graduates the same quality of life.
Additionally, the cities with the highest levels of education could shift in the near future depending on how well the cities are coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it has had on school education. In fact, more than 97% of educators report that their students are experiencing learning losses due to the pandemic.
With more than 97% of educators reporting a learning loss in their students due to the COVID-19 pandemic, personal finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Most Educated and Least Educated Cities in America in 2021.
To determine where the most educated Americans are settling, WalletHub compared the 150 largest US metropolitan areas (MSAs) using 11 key metrics. The dataset ranges from the proportion of adults aged 25 and over with a bachelor’s degree or higher to the racial educational gap and the quality of the public school system.

Key statistics
- The greater Ann Arbor, MI area has the highest percentage of undergraduate graduates ages 25 and older at 55.90 percent, which is 3.8 times higher than the Visalia, California area, which has the lowest percentage of 14 , 60 percent.
- The Worcester, MA metropolitan area has the highest racial education gap, with the proportion of black undergraduate graduates aged 25 and older being 26.11 percent compared to 20.78 percent for their white counterparts, a difference of 5. 33 percent in favor of blacks.
- For comparison: the national average for blacks with the same characteristics is 13.94 percent and for their white colleagues is 21.27 percent.
- Greater Anchorage, AK has the highest gender education gap, with the proportion of female Bachelor’s graduates aged 25 and older being 21.83 percent, compared with 18.42 percent for their male counterparts, a difference of 3.41 Percent in favor of women.
- For comparison: the national average for women with the same characteristics is 20.12 percent and for their male colleagues 19.42 percent.
