Moving company needs skilled workers

AUSTIN, Texas – Just as the sun is rising, Ryder Miller is making sure his moving truck is loaded with the right equipment.
“It’s very hard work that we do,” said Miller, a lead mover at Einstein Moving Company.
Professional moving requires strength, athleticism and integrity. And it’s hard for the Einstein Moving Company to find people who meet these requirements.
The company offers fair wages, unlimited vacation, flexible hours, health benefits, and a 401k plan to match. Chris Anderson, the South Austin branch manager, said a job posting on the Indeed job board could attract 50-100 applicants to the company. But not everyone is qualified for the job and hardly anyone gets it.
“This is how we put our culture together. We just have to be very strict with the type of people we want to bring on the team so that it has a positive impact on everyone, ”he said.
The Federal Association of Business Administration (NABE) found that 47% of respondents to the business situation survey reported a shortage of skilled workers in the third quarter.
“It’s very taxing on the mind and body from the start, which some people just can’t handle,” said Anderson. “Although we have a high retention rate, we lose many crew members or trial day applicants early on because they cannot cope with the work. Hiring is difficult because it takes a certain person to be successful in this industry and to grow positively from it. ”
After submitting the application and references, job seekers go through a telephone interview, a face-to-face interview and a few days in the field before being hired.
“We have a pretty intense process,” said Miller. “You have to want to do this job.”
Once someone gets the job, they go through a work book and get signatures from permanent members like Miller.
“You have to work with different leads – how to properly wind, how to properly charge,” he said.
The company wants to expand but needs more people to get the job done. The South Austin office is currently booked about three weeks in advance.
“We just want to take over Texas,” said Anderson. “We want to branch off pretty much every major junction along the I-35 corridor up there.”
The challenge now is to find the right people to get the job done.
