Construction continues on South Austin’s new Oaks at Slaughter Shopping Center on South Congress Avenue north of Slaughter Lane.
The stores in the new 18-hectare shopping center will begin their staggered openings by November.
The anchor of the development is the HEB, which opened in June 2020 at 8801 S. Congress Ave., Austin. The site will also include a 108-room hotel, banks, and multiple restaurants and retailers, said Milo Burdette, partner and vice president of development for commercial real estate company Barshop & Oles.
The center will bring 10-12 new companies to the region. Construction on the main buildings will be completed around October, while seven stores in individual buildings within the center will open later than the rest of the development.
The first stores to open will be 8,500 and 17,000 square foot retail stores north of the HEB parking lot, Burdette said.
Burdette said he cannot announce any other tenants yet as they are still going through the approval process with the city, but most restaurants and retailers will be locally owned and “have a few names everyone knows and likes”.
Barshop & Oles is also building a public road to accommodate the center. Ralph Ablanedo Drive, which currently connects South First Street to South Congress, will be extended to I-35 and with a new set of traffic lights by October, Burdette said.
