Austin, Texas, August 24, 2021 / CNW / – Jungle Scout, the leading all-in-one platform for selling on Amazon, is celebrating its annual anniversary today Global import report 2021, which shows projected growth in US imports in 2021, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The report examines U.S. ocean imports across 237 countries and all industries between 2015 and 2021, analyzing how the import landscape has changed amid the pandemic, evolving consumer demand, global supply chain disruptions, and more.
The main takeaways include:
- In 2021, US imports were up 33% compared to 2020.
- The total number of imports in the first half of 2021 exceeded 7.5 million, an increase of 33% over the first half of 2020.
- Based on the annual import trends and the current course of 2021, total imports for 2021 could exceed 16 million, which means an increase of 20% compared to the previous year – apart from unpredictable pandemic influences.
- The retail landscape continues to be dominated by a handful of countries and industries.
- Ten countries account for 72% of total imports, and three industries account for 45% of US imports in 2021.
- China continues to be the leader in trade with the USA with over 40% of the import share.
- China Share of imports is more than six times higher than the second largest supplier to the USA, Vietnam, at 6.3%.
- India and Vietnam US import shares win fastest.
- India Share of US imports grew faster than any other country – an increase of 32% between the first half of 2020 and the first half of 2021 – while the total volume of imports increased by 76%.
- Vietnam The share of U.S. imports is up 14% from 2020, with the total volume of imports increasing by 52%.
- In the meantime, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada reduced total exports to the USA during this time.
- The imports of machines are increasing, while the imports of wood and textile products are falling.
- The machinery and electronics industry has held around 20% of total US imports since 2015 and rose 37% in 2021.
- The wood & wood products category has decreased by 16% since 2015. In addition, the textiles category fell again by 9%, after having decreased by 7% from 2019 to 2020.
