AUSTIN, TX – Rep. Steve Toth (R-The Woodlands) announced updated legislation to review the recent Texas statewide election. Rep. Toth’s newly minted HB 26 builds on his suggestion to conduct a forensic review of electronic and paper elections in the 13 largest counties in Texas: Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Travis, Collin, Hidalgo, Denton, El Paso, Fort Bend , Montgomery, Williamson, and Cameron Counties.
“The feedback on the Texas Voter Confidence Act has been incredible,” said Rep. Toth of the response his bill has received. “We are making sure that voters get a place at the front in this process.”
The first new feature added to HB 26 in the committee is the requirement to broadcast the audit live while it is in progress.
“Another way to create transparency is to publish the results of the audit online,” said Toth. “You don’t have to ask your state representative or the governor for a copy. You will get access as soon as the audit report is published. ‘
The draft law involves the Foreign Minister and the local election administrators to monitor the chain of custody for the tested voting machines.
“If we don’t have proper supervision,” added Rep. Toth, “we could get into a situation where the machines are compromised during the audit process and we need to get rid of them. We have to manage taxpayers ‘resources well.’
HB 26 also specifies that the audit will be conducted in an equal number of Republican and Democratic majority districts in order to keep the investigation balanced.
“The point here is to take a look at our current systems and fix any weaknesses for future elections. The largest counties affect most of the races in Texas, so it makes sense to start there, but we will conduct the test in a way that challenges the major parties alike. ‘
