Sergio, whose childhood nickname was Keko, was born on October 15, 1932 in Laredo, Texas, to Jorge F. Villarreal and Lupe Rosenbaum Villarreal. Raised in Laredo, he attended the public schools there and was one of the two student managers of the soccer and basketball team at Martin High School. He later played on the college soccer and tennis teams and wrote a sports column for the school newspaper.
During his time at the University of Texas at Austin, he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity and played tennis on the college team in his junior and sophomore years. In 1953 he received his BBA degree and began his two-year service with the US Army, where he served with the combat engineers at the Rivers Barracks in Geissen, Germany.
Sergio returned to Laredo after the military and trained in the family business JF Villarreal & Co., Inc., a freight forwarding company founded by his father. He was a trainee at Mine Safety Appliances Company’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA before being sent to Mexico City to help found the company’s subsidiary. After the death of his father, he returned to the family business, where he stayed until it was sold to an underage partner.
He joined the Internal Revenue Service as a chartered accountant and worked in the Austin, Texas county office. This led to a position with the National Office of the IRS in Washinton, DC, as a computer programmer and systems tester. He later worked for the US Customs Service as a programmer and for the National Archives and Records Service as a Records Management Analyst and Computer Systems Analyst. After retiring from government service, he worked for Vitro Corporation, an armaments company in Silver Spring, Maryland.
In 1990, Sergio and his wife, Gloria Margarita, returned to Austin to begin their retired lives. In retirement he enjoyed competitive tennis with senior groups, photography, computer use, reading, fishing and traveling. He also enjoyed 10 years of volunteer work with ingesting books with the Texas State Library’s Talking Book Program.
Gloria survived, as did her two children, Rebecca Ann Moseley from Jacksonville, FL and Robert Victor Villarreal from San Antonio. His brother G. Claude Villarreal (Martha) from Washington DC survived him, as did relatives in Laredo, San Diego, CA, San Antonio and Austin.
