AUSTIN, Texas & EL SEGUNDO, California .– (BUSINESS WIRE) – Slingshot Aerospace, Inc., a company that develops world-class space simulation and analysis solutions, announced today that Tony Xiao, former head of engineering, will join Airbus UTM, will serve as vice president of engineering for the company, effective immediately. In his new role, Xiao will oversee the design and development of the company’s technology.
“At Slingshot Aerospace, we develop technology that is at the cutting edge of space innovation,” said Melanie Stricklan, Co-Founder and CEO of Slingshot Aerospace. “As we continue to grow, it is imperative that we diversify our technical team to ensure that we always think ahead and differently about the problems we are trying to solve. Tony’s experience and technical expertise give our leadership team a unique perspective as we work to accelerate the sustainability of space to create a safer, more connected world. ”
Xiao brings over 13 years of engineering experience to the Slingshot Aerospace team. Most recently, Xiao was Head of Engineering at Airbus UTM – a team focused on a technological and international policy approach to enabling airspace management for autonomous vehicles – where he led the engineering and operations team. Airbus UTM was originally known as Project Altiscope, which Xiao founded when he was Director of Engineering at Acubed, Airbus’ Silicon Valley Innovation Center. While at Acubed, he focused on transforming teams from proof-of-concept projects into self-sustaining units with several software-as-a-service (SaaS) projects for the aerospace industry, including the Airbus UTM Organization.
“Slingshot Aerospace addresses one of the most complex problems in the world, namely sustainability in space,” said Xiao. “The space economy is growing rapidly and Slingshot Aerospace’s dynamic virtual environments and decision intelligence technology will help ensure sustainability through safe operations. It’s an exciting time for the company and I’m very excited to be joining the team as Vice President of Engineering. ”
Before joining Airbus, Xiao worked as an engineering manager at Sparkcentral, a messaging app-focused customer loyalty platform acquired by Hootsuite. There he managed and expanded the backend development and project teams and oversaw and designed the technical relationships between Sparkcentral and several integration partnerships at company level. Xiao also worked at Kixeye, a leading game developer, where he held a variety of technical roles including quality software engineer, senior performance engineer, and technical program manager. Prior to Kixeye, he was a systems integration and test engineer at ViaSat, a global communications company, on military SATCOM projects, where he developed throughput test and analysis suites for integration beyond line of sight.
Xiao earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Riverside, and a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Irvine. Xiao will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area and report directly to Stricklan. The search for Slingshot Aerospace’s Vice President of Engineering was led by Silicon Beach Talent.
