Texas bookstore owner shares letter from customer claiming mask requirements will lead to new ‘Jim Crow’

A bookstore owner in Texas shared a letter on social media from an anonymous customer claiming that COVID-19 mask requirements like the company’s will lead to a new form of “Jim Crow.”
The anonymous customer, posing as an Austin librarian, wrote a letter to the owner of the Painted Porch bookstore in Bastrop, Texas expressing her disappointment at leaving the bookstore due to her mask requirement.
“I am trying to support local businesses, especially bookstores, because they seem like a race that is becoming extinct,” the letter said. “However, I can no longer stand the theater that is ‘the mask’.”

The librarian wrote that COVID-19 is “being used as a political tool to divide and polarize people, families and communities”.
“The general population of benevolent, kind-hearted, and caring people is being deliberately manipulated to destabilize society, shut down local economies and small businesses like your own, eliminate access to a wide and comprehensive range of legitimate information, and live like us on Turning your head knows how to do it, ”she continued.
“I found your window book display ironic because if we allow this bizarre agenda to fully manifest itself shortly, there will be a new form of ‘separate but the same’, a new form of segregation, a new version of ‘Jim Crow’ “, added her.

The librarian wrote that she had to write her letter anonymously because of “hatred and ridicule” as well as the “many allegations and ugly assumptions made about those who do not believe in the ‘mask’ or the safety of the non-FDA approved ‘vaccinations. ‘”
“Please seek the truth, because both they and humanity are right in front of you, not behind a mask or a government mandate; and we are all shaking in our boots and looking at each other sideways,” she finished. “Just like the forces of desire.”
In May, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order banning schools and government agencies from requiring masking requirements.

Currently, companies in the Lone Star State are not legally required to have a mask mandate, but business owners are not prohibited from imposing their own in the course of doing business.
Painted Porch owner Ryan Holiday told Fox News in an email on Wednesday that the store has a mask policy “because we have two young children who cannot be vaccinated yet and because we would be devastated, if someone catches COVID-19 in our bookstore ”.
“We provide masks at the door for everyone who doesn’t have any and who have volunteered for countless hours in the vaccine clinic in Bastrop-Land,” continued Holiday. “We feel guilty to ourselves and to our employees and our fellow human beings for taking this basic precaution.”
Holiday said that “a number of great Texans” had visited the bookstore last year, “including Chris Bosh and Manu Ginobili,” and that the two “had no problem masking their fellow citizens.”
“I’m surprised to hear this lady took such a small request so hard,” said Holiday. “The positive response from neighbors and fans all over the world is definitely positive.”
“Like everyone else, we look forward to the days when the pandemic is behind us,” he added. “While it’s here and Bastrop County is just 40% vaccinated, we want to do our part to fight it, and if that means we lose a few customers, so be it.”
