Governor Abbott announces the appointment of a Texas film friendly for the city of Port Arthur

Austin, TX Governor Greg Abbott announced today that the city of Port Arthur has completed the multi-level training and certification process from the Texas Film Commission, which has been sponsoring the Lone Star State for 50 years as a primary destination for film, television, advertising, animation, visual effects, video games, and Extended Reality (XR) production contributed to the growth of local jobs and economies.

“I congratulate the City of Port Arthur for earning the Film Friendly Texas award and for joining more than 160 other Texas communities for honoring,” said Governor Abbott. “As we unleash the full power of the Texan economy, I look forward to continuing to work with all of our communities to ensure they have the knowledge and tools necessary to succeed. Through the Film Friendly Texas training and certification process, communities large and small are able to bring together local businesses with production-related needs, create jobs for Texas-based crew members and residents, and on-site spending at local small businesses. As the Texas Film Commission celebrates its 50th anniversary, I am especially proud of all that it has done to help communities like Port Arthur promote their unique local appeal and achieve economic recovery through media production. “

“Congratulations to Mayor Thurman Bartie, the tour of the city and the small businesses that have made Port Arthur called a movie-friendly Texas community,” said Senator Brandon Creighton. “The community is ready to start working and support projects of all sizes. Filmmakers, producers, and salespeople will soon see what we all know – Port Arthur is an excellent community to make a movie, start a business, and raise a family. “

“Port Arthur is known as a cultural powerhouse that has hosted a number of writers, actors, producers, singers and filmmakers,” said Dade Phelan, spokesman for the House of Representatives. “With unparalleled coastal and marshland views, historic buildings, and the hospitality of southeast Texas, Port Arthur is well positioned to reappear as a premier travel destination for the movie industry. I am proud to represent the people of Port Arthur and I look forward to the impact their Film Friendly Texas Community certification will have on the area. “

“Port Arthur has coastal views that drive a story and hospitable people ready to help crews,” said Darragh Castillo, Destination Management Specialist, Port Arthur Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The Museum of the Gulf Coast connects us to a history of music and film connections, and we are ready to expand that legacy. We’re honored to be a Film Friendly Texas Community. Get the features, short films, music videos, documentaries and more. After a day of shooting, crew members can enjoy our restaurants, hotels, and other highlights, including Sea Rim State Park. Every story starts somewhere and we want it to be here. “

The city of Port Arthur joins more than 160 film-friendly Texas communities who receive ongoing training and guidance from the Texas Film Commission on media industry standards, best practices, and how to effectively implement on-site filming in their community.

The Texas Film Commission at the governor’s office of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism attracted $ 1.66 billion in local spending and created more than 157,000 production jobs across the state from 2007 to 2020.
