Texas men’s basketball dominates San Jose State 79-45

AUSTIN (KXAN) —The # 8 Longhorns got things started early and often when they beat 79-45 Saturday night in San Jose state.
Texas took the lead 26-8 almost in the middle of the first half. Timmy Allen led the Longhorns with 17 points and made 6 out of 10 field goals.
“You know, I’m really just trying to feed on my team-mates,” said Allen after the game. “Coach (Bart) does a great job letting us play free with concepts of a great offensive, so my teammates give me a lot of confidence and I just try to make it as easy as possible for them.”
At halftime, Texas had the game well under control, leading San Jose State 47-17.
However, the first four minutes of the second half were the only black points of the game for the Longhorns.
Texas couldn’t get anything going on offense, and overall head coach Chris Beard didn’t like the effort.
Sensing another slow second half reminiscent of their battles with Northern Colorado after Wednesday night’s break, Beard called for a time out and let the team have it, and the players knew his anger was justified.
“We left a lot out in the second half, it was disappointing for the coaches, disappointing for me,” explained Allen. “That will help us later, we can’t get out in the second half and be flat just because we’re in the lead, with our goals that’s not acceptable.”
“I think the last two second halves haven’t been what we’re used to,” added Beard. “And that’s going to get us sooner than later, and I think that’s what Timmy (Allen) said, we just have to get to where we can play in bursts.”
Overall, it was a win and a game in which Texas ran its business on the defensive, forcing the Spartans to make 27 sales.
That ultimately satisfied the head coach.
“You know, it’s about us, and that’s really important this time of year,” Beard remarked. “The class is out there for us, it’s up to us to grab it and use it.”
Texas will next meet California Baptist at the Frank Erwin Center on Wednesday night. The tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
