BUDA, Texas (KXAN) – Parking is always a problem in Austin, and those headaches are spreading to nearby cities that are seeing their own growth. The city of Buda is working on its first parking action plan. The city council has just passed the plan that will serve as a guide for the growing city.
In the past decade alone, the city’s population has exploded by 151%. The plan offers short-, medium-, and long-term recommendations for parking that will grow and change with the city.

Initially, the city focuses on the inner city. At the moment the plan consists only of recommendations to improve parking for daytime and special events in Buda. These are recommendations following a survey that generated around 200 responses, with most of the comments coming from outside. They found that people wanted to see limited time parking spaces for people to get on and off and move around.
Those behind the plan of Dixon Resources Unlimited, a consultancy focused on transportation programs, say their number one recommendation starts with the locals; For example, they would work holistically to get business owners and employees to park elsewhere and leave the main street parking spaces open to visitors.
“There is an opportunity to get this buy-in and achieve this voluntary compliance, but the key is that we want to holistically ensure that everyone participates so that we can see that only one neighbor participates when the neighbor is right next door occupies those parking spaces at companies that don’t, ”said Julie Dixon, President and Founder of Dixon Resources Unlimited.

Buda City Manager Kenneth Williams says they saw an influx of visitors this year. For the first time this year, they had three months with sales tax receipts exceeding a million dollars each. It did so in May, August and November, according to the city’s tax office.

The city is currently working on the introduction of directional signs in the city center. These are signs that show drivers where to find additional parking spaces in the area.
