Athens, Greece (AP) – Seven female MPs from Afghanistan have arrived in Greece as part of the more extensive evacuation efforts and are supposed to travel to the USA after a short stay, the authorities announced on Wednesday.

Afghanistan’s dual chamber parliament was effectively dissolved after the Taliban took over the country last month. The future of the National Assembly and whether women are allowed to hold positions of authority remains uncertain.

“Legislators and their families will be placed in Greece for a short period of time until the procedures for their transfer and resettlement in the US are completed,” said the Greek Foreign Ministry.

Greece is “obliged to accept a symbolic number of Afghan citizens who stand up for the values of freedom of expression and equality”.

The government has taken a hard line on immigration, saying that, despite the looming crisis, it is determined to prevent large numbers of Afghans from reaching EU member states.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said over the weekend that new extensions to a border wall would be built on the border with Turkey if necessary.

The State Department said that the Afghan legislature traveled to Greece via Georgia and was supported by a US non-profit organization.
