AUSTIN (KXAN) – According to AAA Texas, 3.7 million Texans are expected to travel on Independence Day weekend, the most in the state’s history.

The agency says this year’s travel numbers will eclipse those pre-pandemic as 3.3 million of travelers travel through the Lone State State by car. That is 41% more than in the previous year and 10% more than in 2019.

Airport travel estimates could decrease 3% compared to 2019, with around 338,000 people flying to their destination.

Across the country, 43.6 million people are expected to go anywhere on July 4th, 5% more than those who did the same in 2019, and 3.5 million are expected to fly. The number of air travel has decreased by 10% compared to 2019.

The number of motorists is high despite the highest gasoline prices the country has seen in seven years.

AAA Texas recommends travelers to and from Houston avoid Interstate 10 West from Bernardo Road to Pin Oak Road. INRIX, a company that monitors traffic within cities and predicts potential congestion, says traffic on this route could have 50% more traffic as of 8:10 a.m. on Saturday, July 3rd than on a typical Saturday.

INRIX will also suggest you start your trip after 7pm on July 1st. Start your trip before noon on July 2nd and depart after 2pm on July 3rd
