Austin’s airport warns travelers to arrive earlier this weekend due to busier travel expectations

Austin Airport officials said they recommend arriving at least 2.5 hours earlier on domestic flights and 3 hours earlier on international flights.

AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Airport (AUS) officials are warning travelers not to arrive earlier than normal and “expect a busier terminal experience than usual” on the weekend through Monday, October 18.

Austin Airport officials said they recommend arriving at least 2.5 hours earlier for domestic flights and 3 hours earlier for international flights, regardless of departure time.

Security checkpoints will open at 3 a.m. this weekend, with TSA PreCheck and Clear Screening available at Checkpoints 1 and 2, according to AUS officials.

“In order to facilitate traffic and accelerate the arrival process, departing passengers can be dropped off at both the upper and lower curbs – from the lower level, passengers can quickly get up to ticketing and safety using escalators and elevators”, says it in a press release from the AUS. “In the same way, passengers who are picked up and do not have to pass the baggage claim area can either use the arrivals or departures level.”

The warning comes after thousands of Southwest flights were canceled across the country last weekend, causing major travel delays across the country. At least 80 Southwest flights were canceled from Austin’s airport last Sunday. At least 24 Southwest flights were canceled and 38 delayed last Saturday, according to FlightAware.

AUS officials said Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday remain the airport’s busiest days, with heavy traffic expected on Sunday October 17 and Monday October 18.
