The CFL has this cool video database that reporters can log into and re-watch each game. It was years ago.

You can log in and search for individual players and specific games. It’s pretty awesome.

Hopefully they never get around to uploading the first 57 minutes of the terrible Saturday night game between the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Let the coaching staff untie what they need; Nobody else has to experience that again.

Looking back on my notes from McMahon Stadium, there were few positive moments to stand out in the first three quarters: Rob Cote beat the fastest cow in the world, Frisbee Rob made a glorious return, and the Purolator Game Ball Delivery Truck received the goodbye It deserves.

Otherwise it was pretty dark.

Before anyone blames me for being too negative, let’s acknowledge that the last three minutes have been a lot of fun. It was really the last five minutes. From the moment Rene Paredes hit a field goal to give the Stamps their first points of the evening and make the game 12-3, there was legitimate fun as Calgary made the comeback and won 13-12.

Who is complaining about Jake Maier bonding with Luther Hakunavanhu for a 57-yard touchdown? Not that guy.

And what about Ante Milanovic-Liter’s 35-yard catch-and-run? Please give me more of it.

And in the end, a win is a win. Whatever happens in the playoffs, an 8-6 instead of 7-7 will look a lot better at the Stampeders when CFL historians look back on this season.

If we remember that the Stamps started the season with a 2-5 record and then hit the track at 6-1, that’s pretty impressive, and rightly so.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders definitely have much to fear in the West Division semifinals next week, though they’ll have to look further back than Saturday’s game to convince themselves that the stamps pose a real threat.

Anyway, here is my desperate attempt to find 10 takeaways from the Saturday night game.

BE CAREFUL

The overall premise of this weekly 10 takeaway column is that I will try to dig a little deeper and draw some conclusions about the condition of the Stampeders. There is really no reason for that after the game on Saturday evening.

The stamps played without a number of important pieces. Likewise the bombers. Neither team opened their entire playbook, they were obviously aware of the possibility of playing against each other in the West Finals in two weeks’ time.

We can criticize the way the offense moved the ball. I would guess Ka’Deem Carey would have made a real difference there.

We can criticize the way the defense fought the run. I would guess Mike Rose would have had an influence there.

Both teams will look very different when they enter the field in the playoffs.

VACCINATIONS

If the Stampeders get past the Saskatchewan Roughriders, they’ll be understaffed for the West Finals.

Unvaccinated players can’t travel to the division finals or the Gray Cups, and I asked head coach Dave Dickenson if the Stampeders could field all of their starters. He said they wouldn’t.

Ultimately, the Stamps will play against anyone available for next week’s west semifinals. They will cross the vaccination bridge when they get there.

WISH HIM WELL

You have to feel for Roc Thomas, who worked all season and finally got the chance to start at the stamps on Saturday night.

However, his evening – and likely his season – was interrupted by an early knee injury.

There is not much to add here. It’s just deeply regrettable that everything turned out the way it was for Thomas and hopefully he can recover quickly and get back on the field.

STILL AMAZING

Let’s all take a moment to remember that Hakunavanhu was widely expected to return to York University for his senior year as a college ball this season. Instead, he arrived at camp and earned a spot with the Stampeders.

He hasn’t come up with big numbers this season but he played his part and scored the second touchdown of his career on Saturday night. It was also a gorgeous 57-yarder that gave the Stampeders an opportunity to actually get something out of the game.

Who knows if Hakunavanhu has a role to play in the playoffs, but he will definitely be a useful part to the Stampeders in the years to come.

SHOUTOUT

If you stood in the stands at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night and actually made it through to the end, you deserve some kind of prize – although the last three minutes may have been a prize in itself.

It was cold, it was windy. It was the kind of night that keeps 99% of the human population indoors when given a choice. Lots of people left the game before it was over and that’s not a problem. The product on the field would not have been enough to keep me in the stadium if I hadn’t been paid for it.

The fans are the CFL’s elixir of life. You are the community that makes the league special. Greetings to everyone who braved the elements on Saturday night.

Lower Austria

What are we doing here? We’ll have a lot of content ahead of the West Division semi-finals this week, but I don’t spend more time playing the Saturday night game than I already have. You have better things to do than read 10 exhaustive lessons from a meaningless end-of-season game between the Bombers and Stampeders, and I have better things to do than write them.
