Dobie Dichos brings together people who appreciate good yarn around the campfire under the stars in Oakville on Friday, November 5th. It’s a night to be cherished.

For more than a decade, Dobie fans have gathered under the trees behind the former Live Oak County Jail, now a country inn, to pay homage to J. Frank Dobie and to celebrate the art of the spoken word. Speakers climb into the bed of an old pickup truck that serves as a stage to tell their stories.

From their lofty seats, storytellers share, discuss, curse, and praise Dobie for his love of the old tales of Texas. This year’s participants are WF Strong, Bernadette Nason, Ken Roberts, Tim Tingle, Micaela Mendez and the musician Mike Blakely.

Always on the first Friday in November, the evening around the campfire was opened by Mary Margaret Campbell and Bill Sibley, who acts as moderator, as the opening salvo of the now-closed story festival in George West.

Tickets for the evening are $ 20 at dobiedichos.com, which include the show, a bowl of authentic chili con carne, and a slice of rustic pan campo. Entry is 15 USD excluding the food. Guests are asked to bring their camping chairs and a light jacket.

If you’re in the area just over an hour south of San Antonio on Saturday, November 6th, head to the Dobie / West Performing Arts Theater (dobie-westtheatre.com) in George West for “A Day of Stories” . . “The free event includes the Texas Liars Contest, which is not to be missed.

Dobie Dichos in Oakville is on Friday, November 5th, from 6pm to 9:30 pm. It’s about 2.5 hours from Austin. There is overnight accommodation 15 minutes away in George West.
