Early flight out of ABIA? Get to Austin airport 3 hours before takeoff

AUSTIN (KXAN) – If you have an early flight from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, get there early, officials say.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, airport officials said passenger traffic is returning to pre-pandemic levels and, particularly during the morning rush from 5 to 8 a.m., people should expect delays.
“As a result of the increase, many passengers have increased waiting times at both ticket counters when checking in and at the airport security checkpoints,” said airport officials.

According to ABIA, there are three high points in passenger traffic:
- 5 a.m. – 8 a.m.
- 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
They advise travelers, especially those with early flights, to be at the airport at least three hours before their departure. They also want travelers with flights later in the morning, after 8 a.m., not to get to the airport too early and cause further traffic jams.
Officials say arriving two hours before departure after 8 a.m. should be enough.
One of the airport’s three security checkpoints was closed on Friday. The other two had waiting times of almost two hours. The airport’s online checkpoint website was also down, showing incorrect waiting times.
Transportation Security Administration officials told KXAN’s Jennifer Sanders that while Austin plans to hire an additional 3,000 agents nationwide to handle airport security checks, it is not a priority. The spokesman said the TSA had not given a position leave of absence but “given time off to deal with issues related to the pandemic.”
