If you’re looking for a warm weather destination this winter, maybe just look in your own backyard.

Dallas-Fort Worth ranks fourth on a new WalletHub list of the best winter destinations for warm weather lovers.

Obviously, the ranking rules out any mention of last winter’s crippling ice storm that devastated all of Texas.

To identify the best winter destinations, WalletHub compared 69 of the most populous U.S. metros across six categories: travel expenses and hassles, local expenses, attractions, weather, activities, and safety.

As evidence that the survey was conducted prior to the recent cancellations and snafus by Southwest and American Airlines, Dallas beats everyone else in the travel expense and hassle category (# 1). It also ranks high on weather (# 2), attractions (# 12), local costs (# 13), activities (# 15), and safety (# 26).

With its abundance of spectacular light shows, numerous shopping opportunities and countless festive attractions, it is no wonder that the entire DFW area is repeatedly referred to as one of the best places to celebrate Christmas.

Austin took the # 1 ranking in the new Winter Destinations survey, doing well in the Travel Expenses and Trouble (# 2) and Weather (# 6) categories. It lands at # 10 for attractions, # 12 for local costs, # 13 for warm weather activities, and # 19 for safety.

“The prospects for the winter travel season look good. Most travelers still prefer drive-to destinations, ”Stacy Tomas, assistant professor of hospitality and tourism management at Oklahoma State University, told WalletHub.

In the winter weather ranking, between Austin and Dallas, 2nd place in Las Vegas and 3rd place in San Diego.

Seats # 5 and # 6, respectively, hold onto other major metros in Texas, Houston, and San Antonio.

“Traveling within your area is a great way to have a fun and relaxing journey while saving time and money,” says Tomas. “It’s also a great way to spend money locally with small businesses that are the backbone of the travel industry.”
