WASHINGTON (AP) – Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says people traveling for Memorial Day weekend should be patient as there will be long lines at U.S. airports.
The Transportation Security Administration has seen a surge in new hires so it can be ready for more travel this weekend and over the summer after the nation is out of the coronavirus pandemic, Mayorkas told ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday .
“People will see lines because there will be a lot of people traveling this weekend,” Mayorkas said. “Patience is required.”
FORECAST: Heavy rain likely for parts of Memorial Day weekend
Masks are also required, he added.
“The mask mandate is a federal mandate at airports and on airplanes,” he said. “That will probably apply until mid-September.”
Airlines say domestic vacation travel is at pre-pandemic levels and the number of people passing US airports each day is likely to exceed 2 million before the week is up – the first time since early March 2020.
