The journey through the first 25 games was not easy for Greg Vanney and the Galaxy.
The last nine games will also be a wild ride.
The Galaxy still goes fourth in the week in the Western Conference despite having a winless streak of six games.
“I think everyone is disappointed that we lost a little of the momentum that we had in the first half of the season,” said Vanney on Friday. “I know that everyone is positive and everyone works hard. We’re just trying to further intensify what we’ve done as a team.
“Now that we have more or less the full range of our choices, we get the right partnerships in the field, the right people who can work together to do what we need.”
After a week-long hiatus that was unusual this season, the Galaxy returns to action on Sunday night against Austin FC (6:30 p.m., ESPN2).
Austin FC (5-16-4, 19 points) have lost five games in a row and eight of their last nine, which may open the door for the Galaxy (11-9-5, 38 points) to finally get back on track come. Austin FC has only scored 25 goals in 25 games.
“We had these long defenders where we were decent and then we ended up ruining ourselves with one mistake,” said Vanney. “How we gradually tighten these things up, who’s on the field, how we bring people together on the defensive, are things that we’ve been working on this week.
This league is about dynamism and we need a game where we can put the momentum back in our favor and I think we will be on the right track. ”
The Galaxy defeated Austin FC 2-0 on May 15.
A quick start could also benefit the Galaxy. The Galaxy will only have a win if they allow the first goal.
“We often talk about going 0-0 or 1-0 into the first half in the first half and we’ve found ourselves on the wrong side recently,” said Vanney. “With some of the mistakes we made, we found very different ways to make mistakes. We found a lot of different ways to concede chances and goals.
“Sometimes you feel like we’re running out of opportunities to create these moments, but we find them anyway. You’d think that through some of these experiences we could make these mistakes less and exacerbate some of these things… although over the course of this season we’ve tried as much as possible to find ways to have consistency in our defense, consistency through our defensive midfield have, but we lacked this consistency. ”
Next week’s games will also be extremely important to the Galaxy’s playoff chances. The Western Conference race has improved significantly, with eight points between the Galaxy and tenth place San Jose.
The Galaxy will travel from Texas to Utah for Wednesday’s game against Real Salt Lake and then return home for the October 3 game against El Trafico against LAFC.
“Austin is a dangerous opponent in many ways,” said Vanney. “You really have nothing to lose. They can throw whatever they want at us and take any risk they want to get a result. …. You have nothing to lose and can get started.
“We have a group trying to find the momentum we need to get into the playoffs and have the best chances on the track.”
