BERLIN (AP) – Three people were seriously injured in a knife attack on a high-speed train in Germany, the Bavarian Red Cross announced on Saturday.

In connection with the morning attack on the train station in Seubersdorf, where the train is currently being stopped, a man was arrested, the police said. According to the police, several people were injured but could not provide an exact number.

The train in question, one of Germany’s ICE high-speed trains, was traveling between the Bavarian cities of Regensburg and Nuremberg at the time of the attack.

A spokesman for the Bavarian Red Cross, which has 110 emergency services on site, said the organization had treated three “seriously injured” people who have since been taken to a local clinic.

Between 200 and 300 people were taken from the train and are now being cared for at a nearby location, said the spokesman for the Red Cross.

Local police told The Associated Press that they received a call about the attack around 9 a.m. local time.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said the background to the “terrible” attack was “still unclear” and would “now be clarified”. He said the people in Seubersdorf, a community about 473 kilometers south of Berlin, are not exposed to any “acute danger”.

“I hope that the injured and witnesses recover quickly and completely,” said Seehofer.

The Bavarian state police were on site in Seubersdorf, the local police confirmed.

A spokesman for the German rail network confirmed that the train station in Seubersdorf was closed and the train service between Regensburg and Nuremberg was suspended. Long-distance traffic is now being diverted to nearby Ingolstadt.
