AUSTIN (KXAN) – After a slow start, the Chris Beard era kicked off in Texas when the Longhorns beat Houston Baptist 92:48 in 5th place on Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. It was the last opening night at the Erwin Center as Texas will move into the Moody Center next season.

The game was close in the middle of the first half before Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones hit 3-point shots in a row. Texas led 43-27 at half before opening the second half with an 11-2 run.

Tre Mitchell led six Longhorns in double digits with 13 points. Texas scored 13-23 3-pointers, including a combined 8-14 from Ramey, Jones and Jase Febres, three of the four returning players from last year’s team. Minnesota transfer Marcus Carr, the preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, scored 10 points and gave a team with five assists. Freshman Jaylon Tyson scored 11 points on his college debut while hitting all five of his shots from the field. Vanderbilt Transfer and Hendrickson High School graduate Dylan Disu didn’t play. Disu is recovering from a knee injury sustained in February last year.

Texas starts the season with its highest ranking in a decade.

The Longhorns are now heading to Spokane, Washington on Saturday to begin a top 5 showdown against number one Gonzaga.
