Austin-Bergstrom International Airport saw passenger traffic increase to 1.1 million passengers in May from May 2020, an increase of 745.9% year over year.
A July 16 press release from ABIA said Southwest Airlines accounted for the highest number of passengers at more than 360,000 – an increase of 624.5% year over year.
Spirit Airlines recorded the highest year-over-year increase in May, up 2,469.1%, or nearly 45,000, according to the press release.
The increase in traffic brings ABIA to more than 3.4 million passengers from January to May this year, an increase of 1.1% over the same period in 2020.
The report follows ABIA’s July 13 announcement that the airport will close its south terminal to accommodate a new concourse. The announcement also states that air traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels in the summer, with the number of passengers expected to match or exceed the total by summer 2019.
