Minnesota United in dire need of points vs last-place Austin FC

Minnesota United will be looking for crucial points and a win of the season when they travel to the Texas Capitol for the first time on Saturday night to play Austin FC in an important Western Conference game.

Minnesota (10-10-8, 38 points) starts the weekend over the playoff line in seventh place in the west, but only one point ahead of Vancouver with six regular season games.

Minnesota United travel to Texas after a 3-1 loss in Colorado on Sunday and lose their fourth game in their last seven games. Adrien Hunou scored the Loons goal in the eighth minute; Minnesota conceded three goals in the second half, although he played with man advantage.

“Very disappointing,” said Minnesota United coach Adrian Heath after the defeat. “It would have been a great win for us if we had got the three points, if you look at the table. But now, hey, we are in the playoffs with six games to go. Everything is to be played.”

The Loons have a winless streak of three games and have not won since they beat Houston at home on Sept. 25. The loss to Colorado almost completely eliminated Minnesota United’s ability to host a playoff home game, adding extra weight to Saturday’s game to help it stay up the playoff line.

Austin FC (7-17-4, 25 points) returns to the field after a two-week international break and after beating Real Salt Lake 2-1 at home on Oct.2, the side’s goals to victory.

It was the first time in the club’s MLS history that Austin FC won home games in a row. After Austin was knocked out in five of the first six home games in its inaugural season, Austin has scored in eight home games in a row and scored twice in six of those games.

“We have a very competitive group,” said Austin FC coach Josh Wolff after defeating Salt Lake. “There aren’t many games where we haven’t shown and played and had our moments when we could dominate or bring the game to our opponents, whether at home or away.”

Even after winning the last game, Austin is still in the basement of the west rating.

The teams have split their two games this season, with both games in Minnesota.
