Just before 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Louisiana State Police Troop C announced that it had been informed of a two-vehicle accident on Louisiana Highway 24 in Schriever.
At the intersection of LA HWY 24 (West Main Street) and LA HWY 311, the crash claimed 48-year-old Richard Vizier from Thibodaux, according to police.
Preliminary investigation found that Austin Wernich of Schriever was driving west on LA Highway 311 in a 2010 Dodge Nitro.
As Wernich approached the intersection with LA Hwy 24, police said he came to a stop because of a stop sign.
Vizier, riding a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, was traveling south in the left lane on LA Hwy 24.
Wernich could not give in to the oncoming traffic and began to pull into the Harley-Davidson’s driveway at the intersection.
According to the police, the motorcycle then crashed into Wernich’s vehicle, whereupon Wesir was thrown out.
Wesir was wearing a DOT-approved helmet and was still seriously injured from the impact.
He was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Wernich, who was properly buckled up at the time of the crash, suffered no injuries, according to police.
The police took a toxicological sample from Vizier and sent it for analysis.
Wernich provided a voluntary breath sample that showed no alcohol.
According to the police, this accident is still being investigated.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to die in an accident than vehicle occupants.
The police recommend motorists and motorcyclists to search the streets twice in a row.
Troop C says they investigated 26 fatal accidents with 30 deaths in 2021.
