Construction of an intersection on Rundberg Lane in North Austin. in progress

The City of Austin began construction on several security and mobility improvements on Rundberg Lane in North Austin on July 12th.

The improvements at the intersections of Rundberg on I-35 and Rundberg on Middle Fiskville Road are part of the 2016 mobility contract, and construction at both intersections includes pedestrian protection projects.

The city has added ramps at the intersections that comply with the U.S. Disability Act. The Austin Department of Transportation expects to add reflective lane markings and highly visible zebra crossings at intersections by September 10th.

City crews have also built improved median strips and a new pedestrian crossing island at the intersection at Rundberg and I-35. Pedestrian crossing islands provide protected paths for pedestrians and cyclists who want to cross the street. The planning documents for this project show that the median reconstruction will close the existing median gap on the Rundberg west of I-35 Frontstrasse.

According to the project data sheet, the bus stop of the Capital Metro in Middle Fiskville on the north side of Rundberg will also be relocated for safer customer access.

Road death data from the city of Austin’s Vision Zero website shows there have been three fatal pedestrians as of May 2020 along Rundberg near the I-35 and Middle Fiskville intersections.

In an email to Community Impact Newspaper, Austin Transportation’s public intelligence specialist Jack Flagler said the city expects construction to be completed by mid-September.

The New Capital Metro budget is $ 12 million for the new North Austin metro station

Capital Metro presented a proposed budget of $ 319.1 million for fiscal year 2021-22, an increase of $ 41 million year over year. The increase reflects the optimism of the public transport companies that passenger numbers will return to pre-pandemic levels.

The bulk of the budget, $ 183.8 million, would go towards purchased transportation, which is mostly driver salaries. That number represented a $ 15.1 million increase over the previous year.

The proposal also listed Capital Metro’s capital project funding, which included significant investments in the electrification of the bus fleet. Over a five-year period, public transport plans to spend $ 115.5 million on the purchase of 110 electric buses and $ 34.7 million on the charging infrastructure.

The capital project also included a $ 12 million contribution to Broadmoor Station and $ 4 million over five years to improve the bus station. These improvements are aimed at creating better shading and lighting for drivers.

For the proceeds, Capital Metro is planning a cash injection from federal coronavirus aid programs. The budget shows revenue of $ 172.3 million from operating contributions and grants, compared with $ 75.7 million projected for fiscal 2020-21 and $ 117.1 million for fiscal 2019 -20.

The budget is for sales tax revenue of $ 290.8 million, compared to the projected $ 277.5 million for fiscal 2020-21. Capital Metro is not planning any fare increases in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

The board of directors is to give its final approval on September 27th and hold a public hearing on the budget on September 15th. Once approved, the budget will run from October 2021 to September 2022.
