The Night Owl Podcast is back after a year

AUSTIN, Texas – The Night Owl Podcast returns later this month with new episodes. After almost a year off, one of Austin’s favorite podcasts is back. The Night Owl Podcast was launched in 2017 and has taken central Texas by storm. The Night Owl Podcast was created by Texan Stephen Belyeu and takes listeners on a supernatural journey through some of the most famous places in the region. The Night Owl host and creator Stephen Belyeu joined Your Morning on Spectrum News 1 to talk about the podcast’s origins, its return, and its first live event in 2021.

“I grew up in a small town called Pawnee in South Texas and I was half Hispanic,” Belyeu said. “The church down there is mostly Hispanic, and there’s a lot of South Texas folklore based on the Latin church. Stories like La Llorona, Lechuzas and Chupacabras dominated down there and I was really fascinated by the paranormal in general. I became more drawn to ghost stories and folklore. My background then took me on a storytelling journey, writing scripts for films and television shows. But then the podcast medium popped up and I decided to turn to my love of storytelling with my love of the paranormal and take a new direction. Because at the time I was listening to podcast ghost stories and they weren’t doing it for me. I wanted something more appealing, so I went for it. I feel honored and blessed to have a following that stands behind it and has supported us for so long. So I’m looking forward to getting back on the saddle. “

Commenting on the podcast’s growing popularity, Belyeu said, “I think ghost stories always try to be scary. But in essence, we all want to feel like there’s something else out there. That there is something beyond this life and I’ve taken an approach where it’s still scary because it’s the unknown. So you still get that scary factor listening to the show, but I always get to the core – the emotional story behind the ghost story. What’s going on in these places? How are these people affected? Besides, what’s the bigger story? What do we want to take away from saying we believe in ghosts or not? The show takes a journalistic approach to not only exploring ghost stories but the culture around them, and I think that has cultivated its own culture in itself. So I was happy to see it grow. I think the show gets a lot of support because it’s one of a kind and I think the fans were looking for something like this because I was looking for it, so I decided to create it. And I’m really glad that people are drawn to it for this reason. We’re all curious as to whether ghosts are real or not, and I’m trying to answer that question with the show as best I can.

After a hiatus, The Night Owl Podcast returns with their first live event of 2021 called “Haunted Homestead,” and Belyeu is working with a well-known ghost hunter. “A friend of mine in the paranormal community, Aaron Sagers, is a journalist and television host who has appeared on many paranormal shows on Discovery + and Travel Channel,” said Belyeu. “He called me and said, ‘I’ll be in Austin and I miss the community. I miss everything down there. Can we really do something quickly? ‘ I had two weeks off but I’ve thrown it up and we’re going to have a really fun event at one of our favorite places here in Austin called Pioneer Farms. It’s a beautiful 90 acre farm that’s full of activities and reports. Aaron and I will be doing a live recording of our podcasts together at the haunted farm. You have the option to stay after the recording to join the tour – we have a personal self-guided audio ghost tour that you can take on your smartphone and you can see the haunted 90 acre farm all to yourself with your walking headphones in, at night. So it’s going to be scary and fun, but we’re going to host the live storytelling event and paranormal discussion at Pioneer Farms on July 21st from 7pm to 9pm. “
