The Texas Department of Transportation, along with executives from Buda, Kyle and Hays Counties, broke ground on October 27 for a project to expand Robert S. Light Boulevard. The expansion will provide a connection from I-35 to FM 1626 and will be carried out by contractors from JC Companies, LLC.
Hays County Commissioner Mark Jones said this project has been in the works for six years. After the first groundbreaking on October 14th was postponed due to heavy rain, the project is finally getting started.
“It won’t take any longer to build; It takes time to get to build, ”said Jones.
With so much growth, Jones says the roads are taking in more than they can handle, and he hopes this will reduce 75% of the traffic on FM 967.
“This will provide a safe and efficient route to get many of these vehicles out of downtown Buda,” said Tucker Ferguson, engineer for the TxDOT Austin District. “It will also provide a direct connection between the FM 1626 and I-35 to reduce travel times.”
When FM 1626 was completed and connected to SH 45, an average of up to 20,000 cars were on the road, said Buda’s mayor Lee Urbanovsky.
“Traffic is like water, it finds a way,” said Urbanovsky.
Robert S. Light Boulevard will be extended by about three kilometers from Poco Loco Market at the corner of South Loop 4 to FM 1626. The road will have two lanes in each direction and flyovers will be built to accommodate railroads and other intersections roads.
The project is valued at $ 17.7 million and is scheduled for completion in early 2024.
