Volleyball Welcomes Austin Peay for Home Finale

In the final week of the regular season, the Murray State Racers (14-11, 8-7 OVC) volleyball team welcomes Austin Peay (19-9, 12-3 OVC) to the regular season home finals at the Racer Arena on Wednesday.

LAST TIME OFF

– The Racers shared the weekend streak with Southeast Missouri, falling into four sets on Opening Day before producing a dominant Redhawks swing on Senior Day.
– Murray State on Saturday honored its three senior and student managers for their outstanding contributions and commitment to the program, ahead of the game.
– Brooke Lynn Watts won her seventh newcomer of the week after posting two double-digit kill matches. This is Watt’s tenth weekly award of the season.
– Taylor Beasley took on her sister Zoey, a junior for the Redhawks, finishing her with 10 kills on a .304 hitting clip, including a season high of six kills on Saturday.
– Bailey DeMier produced 71 assists, handing out 39 assists and 11 dives for a double-double on Friday against the Redhawks. The following day, DeMier recorded 32 assists for pairing with 8 digs and four kills on the senior night.
– On her senior weekend, Fernandez led the Murray State defense with 41 excavations in the Split with SEMO. She accumulated 24 digs in the opening game before adding 17 digs and having 7 assists.

REDEMPTION TIME

– The Racers lost a five-set bout to the Govs last month, bringing MSU’s losing streak to five games.
– Since then, the Racers have turned the corner, going 6-2, including winning five in a row.

OVC TOURNAMENT

– The eight best teams will take part in the 2021 OVC tournament hosted by the number 1 seed
– Morehead is currently in first place but the Eagles are traveling to third place in the SEMO which could have a big impact on the standings.
Runner-up Austin Peay visits the Racers on Wednesday before heading to eastern Illinois
– Murray State secured a spot in the tournament ahead of the final weekend of the regular season with an 8-7 conference record

NUMBER TEN FOR # 12

– Freshman Brooke Lynn Watts has won ten awards, seven Newcomer of the Week and three Offensive Player of the Week.
– Austin Peay’s Kristen Stucker was the last conference player to win 10 weekly awards. Stucker was named Setter of the Week ten times in the 2017 season.

CAREER MILESTONES

– Freshman setter Bailey DeMier surpassed 1,000 career assists (1,020) over the weekend and exhibited 71 helpers.
– Freshman Outside Hitter Brooke Lynn Watts recorded double-digit kills in all but one match, making a total of 430 kills.

SINGLE SEASON RECORD CLOCK

– Fernandez is five digs away from her total number of excavations in 2019 (521), which ranks 10th in a single season.
– DeMier needed 130 assists to finish 10th on the Murray State single season record list
– Watts is only 44 away from # 10 in the Racers single-season record books.

HOME PAGE

– Murray State is 7-1 at Racers and 22-4 in sets and has won six of its eight home games.
– The offense averages 14.53 kills per set with a hit rate of 0.252 compared to opponents 10.21 kills per set with a swing rate of 0.139 and exceeds it with 15.74 hits per set to 12.63 hits per set.

HONOR OVC

– The Racers have accumulated OVC awards in nine of the season’s eleven weeks, a total of 15 honors, most from all teams in the conference.
– Freshman Alexa Harris won her first OVC award, Newcomer of the Week (September 20th).
– Senior Becca Fernandez has won the OVC Defensive Player of the Week twice (September 6th; October 4th).
– Freshman Setter Bailey DeMier has won two Setter of the Week Awards (October 18; October 25)

Senior class 2021

The Racers recognized three seniors Becca Fernandez, Emily Matson and Kolby McClelland, as well as student manager Drew Langston for the 2021 season.
– The four have participated in three OVC tournaments together, including an NCAA appearance in 2018, and will make their fourth OVC tournament promotion this year
– Libero Becca Fernandez is Murray State’s all-time dig leader and has 2,412 career digs.
– Fernandez has played 129 career games, the tenth most in racer history with 127 in the Libero jersey.
She has won 12 OVC Defensive Player of the Week Awards.
– Matson has played a total of 70 games for the Racers. For her career, she has accumulated 243 kills, 32 aces, and 131 digs.
– McClelland is second on the team in the kills, with 192 kills averaging 2.49 kills per set, 16 aces and 225 points, and is third in the OVC with a hit rate of 0.284.

THE OVC STACK UP

– Murray State ranks sixth overall in the OVC standings with three Conference Play games remaining.
– As a team, Murray leads the OVC in assists per set (13.16), kills per set (14.28) and digs per set (17.13) and is third in the hit rate (0.220).
– Watt leads in the OVC in kills per set (4.67) and points per set (4.99). She is 14th in the NCAA in KPS and 22nd in PPS.
– Libero Becca Fernandez is best in the OVC with 5.61 strokes / set and fourth in the NCAA overall.
– Freshman setter Bailey DeMier is first in the OVC in terms of assists per set, averaging 11.09 assists / set and 12th in the nation. She is also seventh in the OVC in aces per set with 0.31 aces per set.
– Medium blocker, Kolby McClelland is third in the OVC with a hit rate of 0.296.

SERIES HISTORY

– Austin Peay leads the overall 43-39 series, with the Murray Racers having a 21-13 advantage.
– Last season Austin Peay won both games and won in four straight sets before ending the series with a 3-0 sweep. The Govs won five sets against Murray State earlier in the season.

CUSTOMER AUSTIN PEAY

– Austin Peay moved up to second in the OVC standings over the weekend after taking both games from UT Martin.
– The Govs are 19-9 in the season with a 12-3 mark in the OVC game.
– Austin Peay won a reverse sweep from UTM with five sets, 14-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-10, before hitting the Skyhawks the following night, 26-24, in tight straight sets defeated. 27-15, 25-23.
– Brooke Moore became the leader of Austin Peay’s career kills this week. She opened the weekend with 15 kills and an attack percentage of 0.371 when beating UTM in five sets. She ended the week with 10 kills in a three-set win over the Skyhawks.
– In the statistics, the Govs lead the league with a hit rate of 0.234, third in service aces per set (1.48), fourth in kills per set (13.27) and assists per set (12.10), fifth at blocks per set (2.05) and digs (15.48)
– Austin Peay leads the overall 43-39 series, with the Murray Racers having a 21-13 advantage.
– Last season Austin Peay won both games and won in four straight sets before ending the series with a 3-0 sweep. The Govs won five sets against the Murray State Eariler that season.
– The Govs are coached by season 10 head coach Taylor Mott, assistant coaches Travis LeBlanc and Connor Crawford.
